The construction of a myth by maria mpoyi

This residency was done in conversation with the late artist and printmaker Belkis Ayón. Belkis Ayón worked primarily with myths from the Abakua brotherhood in Cuba. My exploration was a study in how myth can be part pf art, how I can build a myth by doing images and what myths already exists in my image-making.

The residency took place at Grafikens Hus temporary gallery in Farsta in Stockholm. The idea was to create a view, through the windows into the building of the myth. People passing by have been able to see my process and search.

These past months i have been thinking about image motif. Some poses/motifs are hard to read or recognise. They are hard to recognise because your body seldom finds itself in those siruations/not seen in art as much. I have called it taken by water. But sometimes also "orginal sin". It can be hung in different directions. So it sometimes looks like falling, floating, hanging
